The year is 2015, I was working a janitorial job at an RV park, keeping the common areas clean and taking out the teash, basic stuff. I was not fond of the people there and they weren't fond of me, I was young and they were old, bigoted and just shitty in general but a job's a job. So one day the office lady comes in from a smoke break saying 'there's a cat yowling under a car in the parking lot.' I was immediately scared, thinking it could be hurt, I asked and she said 'I dunno, I hate cats. (Like I said, these people sucked.)
So I ask if there is anything I can use as a cage or carrier and I'm told they have a metal cage for when they need to trap raccoons and stuff so I grab that and I go outside. There's a couple other people being proper humans and trying to get him out, I come out with the cage and the woman who's car he was hiding under was scared to leave in case she hit him. I walk over, place the cage down and crouch with my hand out. That little orange baby comes right to me, just yowling it up. The first thing I notice are his massive polydactyl feet and the first words I said to him were 'Hi, Thumbs!' mostly out of amazement out of the size of them. (They looked even bigger when he was small) I got him some water and tuna and I went home early with this yowling cat in my backseat.
I call my husband on my way home and I ask him 'how averse are you to having a cat?' While the cat is yowling in the background. He hesitates because all he knows is that he's allergic and always has been. So I ask him if we can give it like a week and see if it can work, if not we'll look for a home for him.
Thumbs bonded to his Daddy so damn quick, we didn't have a chance. There was some sneezing but not nearly the amount my husband was expecting, we had the weekend with him and by that Monday, Thumbs was our cat and my husband was smitten. They've been best buddies since and I absolutely love my ginger boy.
